Nichia, the global LED manufacturer, is launching an exclusive roadshow across three major European cities in the latter half of 2024. This series of invitation-only events – taking place in Madrid, Lyon, and London – will gather top industry experts, architects, lighting designers, and fixture manufacturers to delve into lighting technology and conscious design to create spaces that enhance the way people live, work, and interact with their environments.

In addition to showcasing Nichia’s leadership in the lighting industry, the roadshow will unveil sustainable lighting innovations that go beyond mere functionality. Leveraging the latest advances in LED technology, these solutions enhance light quality to engage more profoundly with human experience, cultural context, and biophilic principles, fostering a closer connection to nature within built environments.

The events will feature a comprehensive agenda that includes sessions which address local design challenges and opportunities along with hands-on lighting demonstrations to allow participants to engage directly with technology solutions both in architecture and automotive lighting.

The roadshow kicks off with a half-day forum on 19th September held at the Four Seasons Madrid, a prestigious hotel which utilizes Nichia’s latest LED solutions. The program includes conference-style presentations featuring contributions from Anoche Iluminación, Arkilum, ARUP, Estudio Lamela, Formula Luci, MadeinLED and sAtt. The presentations will explore luxury retail and hospitality lighting along with a closer look at the lighting design powered by Nichia in the historic Centro Canalejas Madrid. Attendees will also participate in a roundtable debate, led by a panel of industry experts and moderated byLightecture, on the challenges and opportunities to promote sustainability and well-being in architectural projects.

The second leg of the roadshow is held in Lyon on 6th November. Nichia will present on many topics including high CRI for indoor automotive applications, and the convergence between architectual and automotive lighting. Guest speakers include ENTPE, Cluster Lumière, Gaggione, Stilec, and Formula Luci.

Dr. Ulf Meiners, Managing Director of NICHIA Europe GmbH, emphasized the importance of the roadshow in fostering direct communication with key stakeholders, saying: “Nichia is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of sustainable lighting technology to achieve unparalleled light quality. Our roadshow is an opportunity to share this vision with the architects, designers, and innovators who will bring it to life. These events will not only showcase our latest advancements but also serve as an engaging platform for collaboration with our customers, as we work together to shape the future of lighting.”

While the roadshow events are by invitation only, a limited number of seats for the Madrid and Lyon events will be available by special request. Stay tuned for further announcements via social media on how to secure a spot.

Top design practices attending Circular Lighting Live include AECOM, BDP, Buro Happold, Hoare Lea, Nulty, ORMS, Overbury, Speirs Major, STRÖM, and WSP.

The Circular Lighting Live conference and exhibition takes place in London on 9th October 2024. Delegates from AECOM, STRÖM, Nulty and WSP explain why they consider Circular Lighting Live a “must-attend”:

“Circular Lighting Live gives us an entire day under one roof where we can all share the latest in sustainability in a condensed and focused format. The topic of sustainability so heavily involves both manufacturers and designers (and more), so this gives us the opportunity to learn from one another and really dive deeper into the details.”
Sophie O’Rourke. Senior Lighting Designer, Building + Places, UK & Ireland, AECOM

“Circular economy is an ideology that needs collaboration rather than competition. Circular Lighting Live is a crucial sense check between industry peers to ensure that we are all moving in the right direction to both reduce waste and still provide great value to our clients.”
Emilio Hernandez Co Founder, STRÖM & Co Founder of The Green Light Alliance.

“It’s important to Nulty that we are present at the event as we continue with our internal stance on TM66 and designing to a minimum threshold of circularity.  CLL allows us to keep abreast of the latest in our industry, network with peers, understand product offerings, hear industry thoughts and case studies of more circular lighting schemes!”
Gary Thornton, Director, Nulty

“I’m attending Circular Lighting Live 2024 to explore innovative approaches to sustainable lighting that align with WSP’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The event’s focus on reuse and refurbishment, guided by Recolight’s Hierarchy of Lighting, is crucial as it directly impacts how we design and implement projects that minimize carbon footprint. This gathering is an excellent opportunity to collaborate with industry leaders and ensure our practices contribute to a circular economy in the lighting industry.”
Sacha Abizadeh Growth Director, WSP

Circular Lighting Live is sponsored by major lighting brands: Signify, Albis. Apollo Lighting, ASD Lighting, Bell Lighting. The building sector is facing many major challenges: rising construction costs and a shortage of skilled workers are colliding with an urgent need for new housing. Simultaneously, the energy and heating transition, not to mention the rapid pace of digitalisation, are creating new opportunities for a sustainable future. Messe Frankfurt has responded to the dynamic challenges in the market with a newly formed management team for its Building Technologies division.

Johannes Möller, who was previously responsible for Light + Building, has been appointed Group Show Director, Building Technologies Shows, with immediate effect. Over the last four years, a really challenging time, he successfully managed the world’s leading trade fair for lighting and building-services technology while simultaneously expanding its international network. Against this background, he has been responsible for the management and strategic orientation of the Light + Building, ISH and Intersec brands since August 2024.

He continues to report to Iris Jeglitza-Moshage, Senior Vice President Technology. She assumed responsibility for the division 14 years ago and is also a member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt. Möller’s promotion means she will now be able to focus more on her managerial duties, while her many years of expertise will ensure the necessary continuity. “By taking this step, we have not only settled the succession for three of our most important brands at an early stage but also reinforced the managerial resources needed for our Building Technologies Industry Cluster,” explains Iris Jeglitza-Moshage.

Furthermore, she explains, “We are delighted that we have been able to find a successor within the company, especially because Johannes Möller has made an important contribution to the success of our international portfolio of Building Technology trade fairs over recent years. Now, he will be able to concentrate fully on the strategic growth of these brands in both Germany and abroad.”

Johannes Möller began his career in the trade-fair industry as a graduate exhibition, congress and event manager in the sales department of Prolight + Sound. He then spent four years as the personal assistant to the CEO of Messe Frankfurt before assuming responsibility as Director of Brand Management and Development, Technology, in 2017. After managing Light + Building, taking on overall responsibility for the Technology division is the next logical step and represents the continuation of his previous successes.

ISH will remain under the experienced management of Stefan Seitz. For the past twelve years, he and his team have been planning and organising the world’s leading trade fair for HVAC and water every two years. The management team for the Building Technologies Shows Group also includes Dominique Ewert, who is responsible for the company’s marketing-communication activities in the field of technical trade fairs.

From 1st October 2024, Steffen Larbig will be responsible for the development of Light + Building.

Commenting on the new member of the management team at Messe Frankfurt, Ms Jeglitza-Moshage says, “Mr Larbig brings with him extensive international sales expertise, experience in key account management and a wealth of ideas for the future direction of Light + Building.” The next chapter in the successful development of the brand will be written in close collaboration with the highly experienced Light + Building team.

ISH – the world’s leading trade fair for HVAC + water – will be held from 17th to 21st March 2025.

The next Light + Building – the world’s leading trade fair for lighting and building-services technology – will take place in Frankfurt am Main from 8th to 13th March 2026.

Visitors to this year’s PLASA Show (1st – 3rd September 2024, Olympia London) can once again get up close to vintage technology used by iconic recording artists and theatre productions, courtesy of lighting designer and LSi journalist Rob Halliday, and Chris Hewitt of CH Vintage Audio.

In a special area of the show named after the popular, long-running LSi column, archive equipment will be showcased via a display of vintage consoles and fixtures. Additionally, a range of guest experts set to join Halliday and Hewitt on-stand throughout the event to share memories of tech-gone-by.

Kit set to be displayed includes:

  • The custom Cadac mixing console created for Starlight Express in 1984, which pioneered the computer-controlled VCA mixing approach followed by all theatre shows since.
  • The Strand Galaxy lighting console, which is the first to be fully restored by a Galaxy restoration project led by members of the team who first created the console for Strand in 1980. Furthermore, PLASA Show will see the formal handing over of this console to its new home at Rose Bruford College in London.
  • The automation control console from the original 1986 production of The Phantom of the Opera.
  • The OptiKinetics Solar250 projector, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
  • The Zero88 Sirius lighting console, which introduced generations of users to memory control at an affordable price, to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of Zero88.
  • The Whole Hog lighting console, which will be controlling a selection of contemporary moving mirror lights including the Martin 518 and the Claypaky Goldenscan.
  • The return of Vari-Lite Artisan VL2 and VL4 lighting fixtures from last year’s PLASA Show.

The neighbouring display by CH Vintage Audio will include treasures from the rock’n’roll archives, such as a fully-functioning Allen & Heath (A&H) 28 channel mixer, as used by Pink Floyd during their Live at Pompeii and Dark Side of the Moon shows in the early 1970s.

A large selection of Pink Floyd’s PA from the same period will also be on display, along with gear used by legendary artists such as David Bowie, whose Ziggy Stardust PAS rig from 1973 is also confirmed to make an appearance.

Visitors can also hear from – and speak with – visionary professionals who helped this history unfold, including:

  • Pioneering sound designer Martin Levan who will talk about sound design – then and now – with fellow sound designer Gareth Owen, in one of our dedicated seminar sessions.
  • Neil Rice of OptiKinetics, will talk about the Solar250 projector and lightships in general.
  • David Bertenshaw of Strand will talk about the creation of Galaxy and the process of restoring and preserving classic lighting consoles for the future.
  • Andy Voller will explain the pioneering Vari-Lite system.
  • Allen & Heath founder Andy Bereza who will be on-hand to reminisce and demo the restored A&H mixer

Find Classic Gear Live at the rear of Olympia London during the PLASA Show on stand D55.

The PLASA Show has announced the first confirmed sessions in a bumper programme of seminars, masterclasses and panels taking place throughout the show at London’s Olympia in September. Located across three sector-specific theatres covering Lighting & ProductionAudio & AVand Business & Industry Initiatives, the programme is sponsored by exhibiting company Vectorworks, who are presenting two sessions themselves during the three-day show.

Sessions have been curated to include audio and comms specialist Brew (James Henry Breward) outlining the systems and kit deployed at the All England Lawn Tennis Club to deliver the annual Championships at Wimbledon; and Dan Crompton from Tate Galleries discussing the audio visual arts and the challenges of the evolving technology landscape for these globally acclaimed museums to meet their artist, and visitor expectations.

Other expert contributors include Frankie Boyle who will discuss how lighting affects human behaviour; Jon Burton presenting on HELA’s support of the World Health Organisation’s ‘Make Listening Safe’ initiative and certification; “Broadway’s King of Pop” Gareth Owen discussing theatre sound with pioneer of modern sound design Martin Levan; and Unusual’s Tom Harper who will present a detailed case study on the circular economy with regard to their new HQ and research centre.

LSi Magazine will present a number of sessions based on the magazine’s regular columns, including ‘Heritage Pathways Live’ where a panel of some of the industry’s veteran audio experts will debate the origins of concert PA for the touring industry and its important legacy and impact on live performance today;  and ‘Set In Motion Live’ where the team from Glyndebourne Opera House will discuss how this 90-year old venue has addressed automation requirements to help deliver the highest standard of operatic performance.

Complex issues challenging the industry, including the ever evolving development of new technologies, are also addressed throughout the programme.  The complexities of Ai, and the use of drones in lighting design will both be debated. XM Automation will call out to the theatre automation industry to consider common standards for working together; and the jam-packed programme will also include presentations on new product environmental reports; EU Digital Product Passports; and cybersecurity in the entertainment technology sector.

Meanwhile the Vectorworks sessions will cover production plans, CAD skills and streamlining design processes. White Light will present an enchanting session on bringing illuminated outdoor trails to life;  Hire Hop discusses the best equipment tracking solutions for projects; TiMax explores the issues of spatial audio; TAIT will deliberate a new paradigm for show control systems; Area Four Industries will present two sessions addressing best practice for the stability of temporary structures, and the benefits of cooperative design procedure process whilst Nexo will discuss the challenges and successes of audio systems for sports arenas.

From a people perspective, ‘future-proofing the industry’ continues to an important buzz phrase, and so the issues of neurodiversity; general well-being; pay and conditions; health and safety; apprenticeship pathways; and diversity in the backstage crewing world will all be discussed in open forums, panels and presentations, no doubt generating lively debate amongst the trade show crowd.

With a number of showcase sessions still to be announced, PLASA’s Head of Events Sophie Atkinson comments “We are thrilled by the breadth of subjects being covered at this year’s show. Ensuring relevant, informative and educational seminars are delivered alongside inspiring masterclasses and engaging panel sessions from some of the most respected industry experts continues to be an incredibly important aspect of the show”.

Seminar spaces are offered on a first-come first-served basis, and whilst pre-booking is not required, further information and timings on the sessions highlighted, as well as all other confirmed sessions are now available on the PLASA Show website here.

Smart Buildings Show 2024 is delighted to announce The Lighting Industry Association (LIA) as an association partner.

An increasing shift towards LED lighting is helping to improve the UK’s position in its aim to meet its net zero carbon emissions by 2050 target. An effective lighting control system can add to a building’s environmental credentials by helping to ensure the lights are only on at times they are needed and only in the places they are needed. It is therefore becoming widely recognised that lighting controls will play a significant role in creating intelligent buildings fit for the 21st century.

Visitors to the show will have the opportunity to discover more about the latest lighting control products, and they can learn more about their relevance to the smart buildings industry in the Controls and Networks Theatre, which is sponsored this year by the DALI Alliance – the internationally-standardised protocol for digital communication between lighting control devices.

Smart Buildings Show Sales Manager Claire Hatchett expressed her delight at having the support of the LIA, saying: “We are very proud to welcome the LIA on board as an association partner of Smart Buildings Show. The LIA is a hugely influential organisation in a sector that will play a vital role in helping to create intelligent and sustainable buildings for the future. We have a number of exhibitors involved in lighting controls and we are looking forward to helping spread the word about their increasing importance in smart building design.”

Taking place at ExCeL London on 9th – 10th October, Smart Buildings Show 2024 will connect visitors to the latest information and technology in the smart buildings industry. A full conference programme across four theatres will provide visitors with a wide range of relevant talks and discussions relating to the smart buildings industry.
